Great Blogs
Here are some favorite blogs related to arts, culture, and faith that are definitely worth checking out!
- Calgary Arts Development: Full disclosure, I’m working for CADA this summer. Still, even if I wasn’t (and before I was), their site is always a go-to for information about everything related to the arts and culture in Calgary. They’re pretty much the hub of links to everyone else, reports and statistics, classified ads and community networking, and event guides and listings. They also run ArtsMart, which is the central event listing service in Calgary.
- Calgary is Awesome: This is a pretty great city, and I’m reminded constantly of how dynamic it is and how much potential there is for an explosion of creativity and culture. This site is a daily reminder of all the best things about it and the people and places that are making Calgary a better place to be.
- Body Creative Network: I’ve just discovered this blog in the last week or two (when Dave linked to my blog in his “Friday Five” feature, actually), so I’m just starting to delve into what’s here, but he’s a fellow Albertan (and I won’t even take points off for the fact that he lives in Edmonton!), and the first sentence on his website about the tension between faith and art pretty much guaranteed that I’d keep reading.
- Righteous Insanity: John Cosper is a playwright who has been working in theatre ministry for quite a while. I directed several of his plays when I was leading the senior high team, and he has a huge library of sketches and full-length scripts, as well as insights into being both Christian and comedian.
- Stuff Christians Like: Jon Acuff started this based on the popularity of Stuff White People Like, but in my opinion, it’s much better. For one thing, he posts a lot more often. For another, he manages to simultaneously pinpoint all the slightly ridiculous things about Christian culture and mock them while still being convicting and challenging, and yet funny at the same time.
- Thistledown Arts: Joanne is a visual artist, writer, teacher, dramatist, and more — and was, in fact, one of the first people to set me on a path to a career in the arts, specifically theatre (and has been a good family friend for as long as I can remember). She was very influential in my early teen years and my creativity at that point in my life, and I was so excited to find and subscribe to her blog.
- The Unicorn Triumphant: I stumbled across this based on a “recommended” read by my Google Reader, and I’m glad I did! Cole Matson is a theatre artist and C.S. Lewis scholar who writes about his own intersection between faith and the arts, and I find myself agreeing with him (and finding other reading material) more often than not.
- YYC Blogs: Blogs about Calgary (and the rest of the world), by Calgarians. It’s a diverse crowd of bloggers, talking about all kinds of topics, all unified by this crazy city.
